May : Stump up for Trees take over !
After discussions with the Cradle for Nature team and with Pontypool Park Estate (our landowners), on 1st May 2024 Stump Up For Trees took over the lease of the Varteg site. Many thanks to Jenny Knight and the STUMP team for working to achieve this and for taking over management of the site: we are sure it will be in safe hands for the future.
STUMP have plans to use the site while continuing their work of tree growing and planting, and hope to involve Universities and researchers in the site. They cover many aspects of woodland creation including hedgerows, they give landowner advice, conduct ecological surveys and have established a tree nursery.
Members of CfN will maintain the CfN website and some of us hope to be actively involved in future work and visit south Wales from time to time. In the coming months we will try to write up a final summary of the 30 years+ of work led by the late Professor Martin Haigh and the team.
